Couples Counselling

Your marriage deserves a space where both voices can be heard.

Marriage can be one of the greatest sources of comfort in our lives.

It can also become one of our greatest sources of pain.

Sometimes couples come because communication has broken down.

Sometimes the same argument keeps happening.

Sometimes trust has been damaged.

Sometimes both spouses love one another but no longer know how to reach one another.

And sometimes a couple is trying to determine whether their marriage can be repaired at all.

Couples counselling at Baṣirah Care provides a structured, confidential space in which both spouses can be heard, understood and guided towards greater clarity.

The aim is not to determine who is right and who is wrong. It is to understand what is happening, identify the patterns keeping the conflict alive, and explore what can be done differently.

The Journey

The Couples Counselling Journey

  1. Step One

    Reach Out

Contact Baṣirah Care by email or through the enquiry form.

Let us know that you are enquiring about couples counselling and provide some basic information about your circumstances.

  2. Step Two

    Arrange Your Appointment

We'll work with you to find a suitable date and time.

Where possible, we prefer the first couples counselling session to take place in person, as establishing rapport and creating a comfortable therapeutic environment can be particularly valuable when working with two people.

Online counselling remains available where an in-person appointment isn't practical.

  3. Step Three

    Separate Couples Intake Forms

Each spouse will receive their own Couples Counselling Intake Form.

Each spouse completes their form independently.

They may bring their completed form separately to an in-person appointment or submit it separately by email for online counselling.

The information provided by one spouse is treated confidentially and is not automatically shared with the other spouse.

Information from an individual intake form will not be deliberately referenced in joint sessions in a manner that compromises the confidentiality of the person who provided it.

The purpose is to allow each spouse to communicate honestly about their experience while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality.

  4. Step Four

    Receive Your Welcome Pack

Once the appointment has been confirmed, you'll receive a Couples Counselling Welcome Pack containing information about the process, expectations, confidentiality, and preparing for your first session.

  5. Step Five

    Your First Session

The first session is an opportunity to begin understanding your marriage and your story as a couple.

    We listen to both spouses.

We explore the history of the relationship, what brought you to counselling, the patterns of conflict, the strengths within the marriage, and what each spouse hopes can change.

The goal is not to rush towards assigning blame.

    It is to understand.

A Space Without Bias

Both voices matter.

Couples counselling requires the counsellor to remain as impartial as possible.

At Baṣirah Care, we do not approach marriage counselling through a predetermined ideological lens. Our counselling is neither shaped by misogynistic assumptions nor by feminist ideology.

We do not begin with the assumption that the husband is automatically at fault. Nor do we begin with the assumption that the wife is automatically at fault.

Instead, we seek to understand the individuals, the marriage, the circumstances and the patterns that have developed between them.

The objective is not to choose a side.
It is to help both spouses see clearly.

Our Islamic framework provides the principles within which that process takes place.

Counselling & Qur'anic Arbitration

A support, not a replacement.

The Qur'an provides a specific framework for serious marital conflict:

فَٱبْعَثُوا۟ حَكَمًا مِّنْ أَهْلِهِۦ وَحَكَمًا مِّنْ أَهْلِهَا

“Then appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family.”

Qur'an 4:35

Couples counselling is not intended to replace this Qur'anic process of arbitration.

Where both families have individuals who are capable of approaching the matter with wisdom, fairness, discretion and within the framework outlined by the Qur'an, we would encourage couples to consider that route.

The difficulty, however, is that many couples today do not have access to family members who can fulfil this role appropriately. Distance, family loyalties, emotional involvement, preconceived opinions and familial partiality can make impartial arbitration extremely difficult.

In such circumstances, professional couples counselling can provide another structured avenue for support. It should not be understood as a replacement for the Qur'anic model, but as a practical form of support where suitable family-based arbitration is unavailable or cannot be conducted appropriately.

An analogy may be made to tayammum: when the normal means of purification is unavailable, the Sharīʿah provides an alternative means that fulfils the purpose within its own prescribed framework.

The principle is not that the alternative replaces the original in every circumstance. Rather, when the original avenue is genuinely unavailable or unsuitable, another legitimate means of support may serve a similar practical function.

Where appropriate, we may also recommend that couples seek guidance from qualified scholars alongside counselling.

Protecting the Comfort of Both Spouses

Whether counselling takes place online or in person, the comfort and dignity of both spouses matters.

Where required, appropriate pardah/privacy arrangements and screen positioning can be accommodated for online or in-person sessions.

The aim is to create an environment in which both spouses can participate comfortably and with appropriate consideration for their religious values.

Sometimes Individual Sessions Are Necessary

Couples counselling does not always mean that every conversation must happen with both spouses present.

At certain points in the process, it may be beneficial for one or both spouses to have an individual session. This can happen with Baṣirah Care or, where appropriate, with another therapist.

We may recommend another practitioner when we believe a different therapeutic relationship, specialisation, or setting would better serve one of the spouses.

The goal is not to keep everything under one roof. The goal is to serve the marriage and the individuals within it responsibly.

What We Are Working Towards

Not simply to stop arguments, but to understand what lies beneath them.

Communication patterns
Recurring conflict cycles
Emotional triggers
Expectations
Trust and betrayal
Boundaries
Family dynamics
Intimacy and connection
Parenting disagreements
Financial conflict
Extended-family difficulties
Emotional regulation
Forgiveness and repair
The impact of past experiences on the present marriage

We seek to identify the links between thoughts, emotions and behaviours that keep unhealthy cycles going.

Once those patterns become visible, couples can begin developing healthier ways of responding to one another.

When to Seek Help

You don't have to wait until your marriage reaches breaking point.

Sometimes the wisest time to seek counselling is before the crisis.

A small recurring problem can become a deeply entrenched pattern when left unaddressed for years.

Counselling can help couples develop greater awareness, communication and emotional maturity before those patterns become overwhelming.

And if the crisis has already happened?

There is still room to make sense of what happened, understand what brought you here, and determine what the next step should be.
